I recently found out that Good Humor Toasted Almond Bars have been discontinued. They were actually discontinued last year, but a lot of people are just now starting to notice their absence.
I can’t say I purchased these a lot recently (perhaps this makes me part of the problem that led to their demise), but I used to eat them quite often as a kid, especially during the summer. The day camp I went to had snack time every afternoon, and we were usually offered our choice of an ice cream bar (or something similar that was portion-controlled and easy to distribute to a large group of unruly, hungry children). I often ate a Toasted Almond bar, or one of the other “cake-coated” Good Humor ice cream bars on sticks: Chocolate Eclair or Strawberry Shortcake.
Good Humor tweeted (Xed?) a statement in response to a Toasted Almond bar fan who noticed the beloved treats were MIA:
Good Humor also said in a statement that discontinuing the Toasted Almond bars was a “necessary but unfortunate” decision as it updates its “product portfolio to reflect consumer preferences.”
Toasted Almond bars contained almond-flavored ice cream surrounded by a layer of vanilla ice cream. The “signature cake coating” on top was also almond-flavored. I always found them to be just the right size to be satisfying, but not overwhelming. I enjoyed the subtle, not overly sweet flavor of these ice cream bars.
If you’re feeling particularly enterprising, you could try to recreate these treats on your own. There are plenty of copycat recipes around, most of which use vanilla ice cream (easy enough to find). Finding almond ice cream, I think, would be a bit more difficult. You could, of course, make your own almond ice cream from scratch; but for me, that seems like a lot of work (for all the kitchen gadgets I own, which are numerous, I don’t have an ice cream maker). The “cake coating” seems to be achieved in most of these recipes by grinding up golden (vanilla) Oreos with toasted almonds. You could use ice cream molds or popsicle sticks to recreate a Toasted Almond bar.
But if I’m feeling nostalgic for a Good Humor bar, I’ll probably just reach for a Chocolate Eclair or Strawberry Shortcake bar, since those are still available (for now). Perhaps I’ll have to keep an eye on the freezer sections in my local supermarkets to see if any of them still have any Toasted Almond bars left.
Of course, there’s always the possibility that Good Humor will bring back the Toasted Almond bar. And in fact, you can sign a petition urging them to do so.
Did you eat Toasted Almond bars as a kid?
Did you eat them as an adult?
Do you still have any in your freezer?
Have you seen them anywhere?
Would you attempt to make your own?
Do you actually prefer Chocolate Eclair or Strawberry Shortcake?
Got a new snack you’d like me to write about? Want to talk to me about your favorite snacks? Let me know!
Want to share the love?
Have you subscribed yet? As an old-school pizzeria in Brooklyn once said to me the first time I ordered a pizza from them, “Where you been?”
Would you like to buy me a virtual coffee to go with my snacks?
These were the absolute best flavor they had. You could of told me they were discontinued 15yrs ago and I would have believed you because they were never in the stores!!! People can't buy them if the only ones the have in stores are Chocolate and Strawberry. No wonder they said they weren't popular. Such a shame :(
I absolutely love these ice cream bars, one of their best, If not THEE best..is their anything we could do to get those ice cream bars back?? what a shame, those were my absolute favorite and no other brand even makes these
