Snack attack: a snack roundup!
A new feature where I periodically round up some information about new snacks
Hello Subsnax readers and lovers of snacks,
It’s time for a Snack Attack, a new feature where I am going to periodically round up some information about new and noteworthy snacks.
First up, we have a special Minecraft edition of Frosted Flakes. According to the fine folks at Kellogg’s, “The limited-edition cereal features Kellogg's Frosted Flakes® and green squares of ‘Creeper Bit’ marshmallows that evoke Minecraft's famously pixelated block look.” I’m sure these will be grrrrrrreat for fans of Minecraft.
Next, we have Laoban Dumplings. These frozen dumplings come in a variety of flavors, including Ginger Chicken, Pork & Chive, Livin' On the Vedge (note: I always appreciate a pun in a product name!), and Pork Soup Dumpling flavors. I recently sampled the Pork Soup dumplings. The dumplings can be steamed, boiled, or pan-fried, so I chose to steam them in my rice cooker (although my rice cooker claims its steamer basket is non-stick, the dumplings did stick to the steamer basket a bit when I tried to take them out, but this is not the dumplings’ fault at all. Next time I’ll spray a little cooking spray on the basket before steaming my dumplings). I’ve never met a dumpling I didn’t like, and these were no exception. They were tiny little pockets of delicious goodness, smaller than the soup dumplings you’d typically get in a restaurant. I served them to my family along with some stir-fried rice for a delicious, easy weeknight meal. I am definitely going to try the other flavors and would eat these again without hesitation.
Recently, I went to a Van Leeuwen Ice Cream store in New York City with my son and a friend of mine and her two kids. I appreciated the many (not just one!!!!) non-dairy options available. The vegan ice cream I had — Vegan Chocolate Fudge Brownie — was outstanding. My son had Brown Sugar Cookie Dough Chunk with chocolate sprinkles, hot fudge, and whipped cream (he was really going all in). The scooper, a non-Mom, gave my kid much more ice cream than I would have. He was delighted. I paid with a credit card, got an email receipt, and ever since then have been getting emails from Van Leeuwen. I am terrible about deleting and unsubscribing to emails. Anyway, Van Leeuwen has announced a lineup of seven new spring flavors (some might call them Stunt Ice Creams) to be sold exclusively at Walmart locations: Hidden Valley Ranch, Sweet Maple Cornbread, Blood Orange Chocolate Chip, Carrot Cake, Strawberry Shortcake, Honey Graham Cracker, and Limoncello Cake. I haven’t tried any of these yet, but I hope to try them soon, despite the fact that there are no Walmarts anywhere near where I live.
And just in time for Easter, Friend of Subsnax Amy Barnes and Marcia Kester Doyle wrote a great review of Peeps-Flavored Pepsi for McSweeney’s. Go read it!
Got a new snack you’d like me to write about? Let me know!
